As dengue cases soar, DHS officials initiate awareness among citizens

PANJIM: A total of 180 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported in the State from January to August this year as against 250 cases reported during the same period last year.

Of these 180 confirmed cases, as many as 80 cases were recorded last month. Last year, 100 cases of dengue were reported in the month of August.

According to data provided by the national vector-borne disease control programme (NVBDCP) cell of Directorate of Health Services, of these 80 confirmed cases recorded in August, 10 cases were reported from South Goa district while 70 from North Goa district.

In North Goa, 11 were reported from Sankhali, 14 from Mapusa, 12 from Saligao, 7 from Siolim, 5 from Candolim, 1 from Pernem, 3 from Aldona, 4 from Bicholim, 2 from Casarwarne, 5 from Colvale, 2 each from Porvorim, Mayem and Chimbel.

In South Goa, 4 cases were reported from Vasco, 4 from Cortalim and 3 from Canacona.

On efforts made by DHS to deal with the dengue, CMO Dr Kalpana Mahatme said, “We are doing lots of work like house-to-house visits, checking of breeding places, distributing leaflets and pamphlets of dos and don’ts if there is dengue. We are undertaking fever surveys in the areas where dengue cases have been reported. We are also taking help from local bodies in our effort to deal with the issue.”

The official said the DHS was waiting for the report of death of the 30-year-old woman from Candolim.

, who had died of suspected dengue. The official said a cleanliness drive has been taken up in Candolim with the support of local bodies.
