As fatal accidents soar in Ponda, voices echo to declare road safety as an emergency

PONDA: With the horrific fatal accident at Farmagudi and Kundaim within gap of eight days where a precious life was lost, locals feel that the only way to stop such killings on the road is to introduce immediate round-the-clock road safety awareness on an emergency basis.

In a shocking revelation, it has been found that among the 25 people who died in road accidents   from January to December last year, 16 were on two-wheelers.

During the past one-and half-month, four fatal accidents were reported – two at Ponda and two at Dharbandora.

Umesh Naik said “Most of the fatal accidents occur due to overspeeding. There is a craze to speed up and we don’t realise that we share the road with others. High speed results in terrible crashes as it is just difficult to stop or slow down when we zoom on the road. Besides drowsy driving is dangerous particulary at dawn when there are high chances of people dozing at the wheel which result in fatalities.”

The need of the hour is to sensitise all drivers  on road safety measures so as to save lives, added Naik.

Tushar Kavlekar said “Earlier there was a  continuous awareness programme on road safety through media like requesting people to keep calm while driving, not to drink and drive, stop using cellphones while driving as speed kills and leaves families without support. Sadly this has been discontinued. “The issue of accidents need to be sensitised to minimise or do away with road accidents” stated Kavlekar.
