‘As sewage raises a stink in Baga, locals given STP connections’

CALANGUTE: In an attempt to solve the problem of overflowing soak pits and people releasing sewage into drains and other places, locals in Baga, Calangute have been given connections to the sewerage treatment plant (STP) at Baga.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo  said the connections are only being given to the houses of locals. “The STP which we set up has to start now and we will give connections to locals who were having problems because their septic tanks were getting full. For that not to happen, some connections to the STP at Baga have already been given to locals in Sauntavaddo and Khobrawaddo, after which we’ll come to Umtawaddo,” he said.

But no connections will be given to commercial resorts and hotels until the ‘reverse pipeline’ is in place to take the treated sewage water to the garbage treatment plant (GTP) at Saligao.

Baga has always attracted good quality tourists and if these tourists should continue coming, then there has to be cleanliness, he said. “Cleaning of roads, footpaths, pathways, ensuring there are no encroachments has to be constantly monitored if we want to continue to attract good tourists,” Lobo said.
