BICHOLIM: Heavy rains over the last two weeks prompted the Water Resources Department to open all the four gates of the Anjunem dam.
The dam area experienced an astonishing 107 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, causing the water levels to fill to the crest at 93.18 meters. The downpour has raised concerns among authorities, prompting them to take swift action to mitigate potential flood risks.
The dam area has already received 4108.4 mm of rainfall during this monsoon season. A warning has been officially issued, urging residents and local authorities to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, the water levels at neighbouring Amthane dam has reached a critical point as it has reached full capacity. To manage this impending crisis, additional water is being released from the Amthane dam to prevent any potential breaches.
These relentless and torrential rains have besieged the taluka for the past few days, causing widespread inundation in several low-lying areas. Reports of property damage and disruption to daily life have emerged, necessitating immediate action from emergency response systems.
Authorities are now on high alert and have initiated emergency measures to safeguard the affected communities.
