Assagao residents upset over constant power cuts

MAPUSA: Irked over the constant power cuts and flickering lights, a group of youth from Assagao on Tuesday met the Assistant Engineer(AE) of Electricity department, Mapusa section. They confronted the AE and questioned the cause of this problem as well as steps that the department has taken to solve the issue.

They said that for the last many years, the people in Siolim constituency, mainly the Assagao Badem area, are facing major issues of low voltage and power cuts which is causing major inconvenience to the residents of this area. Their household electric equipment is getting damaged, while senior citizens are facing issues in the absence of power amidst the sweltering heat.

They accused the government of negligence and blamed the increase in construction and builder lobby as the cause of power cuts.

“When there are power cuts, people cannot stay inside their houses especially senior citizens. Every weekend for almost half a day while every now and then the lights keep flickering due to low voltage.  Household electric items are getting damaged due to this gross negligence,” Ranjit Parsekar said.

Responding to the grievances raised, the assistant engineer Mamta Haldankar said that there is load issue in Anjuna Assagao area, as well as Siolim area. A new sub station at Badem is proposed and the process of land acquisition is in the final stage. We are trying to get the project ready by next year.
