Assailants open fire at sand extraction site in Curchorem; leave one dead, other injured

QUEPEM/CURCHOREM: Sand extraction at Bansai, Curchorem turned tragic when unknown assailants allegedly opened fire at three persons involved in the illegal activity which left one dead and the other injured in the wee hours of Thursday. 

Speaking from the crime spot SP Sammy Tavares said, “Around 1.30 am police received information from Curchorem Primary Health Centre (PHC) stating that two persons have been brought to the centre. However, one of them, 23-year-old Yusuf Alam from Jharkhand was declared dead on arrival while the other, 33-year-old Mohammad Sahu, who was brought to the centre in a critical condition, was shifted to the GMC, Bambolim. Both sustained bullet injuries. On receiving information we rushed to the site and conducted the panchanama.” 

“We are ascertaining the exact cause which led to the firing and investigation is on. We have contacted the forensic team to gather further details from the spot,” SP Tavares said.

Furnishing further details about the incident, he said, “Illegal sand extraction was underway when the assailants fired gunshots at the victims. As per the information we received, there were three persons onboard a canoe when the incident occurred. Of the three, one was shot dead, the other critically injured while the third person, who survived the attack on his life, was brought to the shore.” 

He said, “The survivor said that he has no information about the firearm or the bullet which was used in the incident. Investigation is on and the forensic team is gathering evidence from the spot.”

SP Tavares, DySP Nilesh Rane, DySP Shivendu were present at the spot.

Congress demands thorough probe: State Congress president Amit Patkar has requested Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the Home portfolio, to direct his department to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident. 

“The horrific incidents that are occurring in the State for the last few days including murder of Sonali Phogat show that law and order situation has completely collapsed. Goa has become a lawlessness State. Chief Minister must take serious cognisance of murder at Bansai as this incident occurred in the Environment Minister’s constituency and without any local political support, activities of illegal sand extraction cannot be carried out,” said Patkar and demanded that the culprits be arrested without any political pressure.

Five held for extracting sand from rivulet at Curchorem

CURCHOREM: The Curchorem Police on Thursday arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in extraction of illegal sand in a rivulet at Bansai, Curchorem.

The police gave the names of arrested persons as Vijay Adel, Amey Adel, Yogesh Adel and Vivek Naik, all residents of Maad-Bansai, Curchorem and Ramdas Naik of Xeldem.

SP Sammy Tavares said all the arrested persons were involved in extraction of illegal sand thereby violating the provision of Minor Mines and Mineral Concession Act and provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) by committing theft of government property and also against the directives of the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

The Curchorem Police have registered the case against the accused under Section 379 read with 34 IPC and under the relevant provision of Minor Mines and Mineral Concession Act.
