A first-year MA Economics student from Assam was allegedly assaulted inside the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) hostel in Madhya Pradesh over his Northeast identity. The victim, Hiroj Jyoti Das, suffered serious injuries and claimed he was attacked after being questioned about his name and home state.
The incident reportedly occurred around 4 am on January 13 when Das stepped out of his room at the Guru Gobind Boys’ Hostel to use the washroom. He was allegedly stopped by a group of six to seven students, who appeared intoxicated, and questioned about his background. After he said he was from Assam, he was allegedly beaten and threatened with death.
Das was initially treated at the university dispensary before being shifted to a district hospital. Medical reports confirmed facial fractures and multiple injuries. Five students were expelled following protests on campus.
