For a change, the police ghar at Mormugao seemed a preferred option to the Apna Ghar at Merces.
The teenager from Assam, who escaped from the remand home at Merces on January 6, surrendered before the Mormugao police on Friday, after claiming that he had been tortured by inmates at the remand home.
It may be recalled that Rafikul Islam alias Kumar Sopikul was arrested by Mormugao Police at the defense area in Bogda-Vasco on December 24 and was initially suspected to be a terrorist.
Islam, who had escaped from the remand home on January 6, contacted Mormugao Police PI Sagar Ekoskar on Friday morning and informed that he was tortured by the inmates of home and his complaint had fallen on deaf ears, said police.
Police further said that Islam pleaded before PI Ekoskar that he did not want to return to the remand home or his native place and requested authorities to employ him in the State.
PI Ekoskar said that Islam was detained outside the railway station and was handed over to Old Goa Police station, since Apna Ghar Superintendent-cum-Probation Officer Sumedha Bolekar had filed a missing complaint with the Old Goa Police Station.
