MARGAO:  Irked by the dumping of garbage near Hedgewar School in Davorlim, a large number of locals, mostly parents of students at the school gathered at the dark spot on Saturday and demanded that the piles of garbage are removed and action taken against the culprits who dump their waste in the area.

The group told Herald that the area, where a garbage collection shed was erected, has been used as a dumping ground for several years now, and political leaders have failed to resolve the issue despite repeated complaints. They have even demanded the removal of the garbage collection centre at the site, which has resulted in people flinging bags of waste at it, and the garbage being strewn all around the shed, often by stray dogs and cattle.

Krishna Naik, Headmaster of Hedgewar School told Herald that the garbage menace has badly affected the functioning of the school, as the stench is overpowering, and the unsanitary conditions pose a health hazard.

“Earlier, we used to notice just two or three bags of garbage dumped over here. Now, it has become yet another Sonsoddo,” said Naik.

He said the spot, being on the border of Davorlim and Sao Jose de Areal villages, gets ignored by the authorities of both panchayats. Shahanesh Desai, a parent, said that students and parents are facing lots of hardships due to the garbage menace, and called for the authorities to immediately get it cleaned up.
