PANJIM: Goa Governor Mridula Sinha has summoned a weeklong winter session of the Goa State Legislative Assembly from January 11, 2016.
The Assembly session will commence with the Governor’s address and will elect a new Speaker. The BJP-led government has zeroed in on deputy speaker Anant Shet to take over as Speaker of the State Assembly.
Former speaker Rajendra Arlekar had resigned from the post in October to join the Laxmikant Parsekar cabinet. Arlekar has been appointed as Minister for Environment, Forest and Panchayats. Since the government has a majority in the House, the opposition Congress may not file a nomination for the speaker’s post.
A new Deputy Speaker will be also elected. Speculation is that the party wants Vishnu Wagh for the position.
