PANJIM: Together for Panaji Association has written to the Corporation of the City of Panaji and Principal Conservator of Forest drawing their attention towards the harming of trees by piercing nails through their barks.
The association has urged the CCP to come out with a scientifically appropriate solution by involving experts and also discipline the existing violators.
“It is disheartening to see age-old trees being harmed by the nails piercing through their barks for holding loops of cable of various kinds. During the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the trees were illuminated with lighting strips that were nailed into the trees. Such unscientific use of trees leads to a slow death of the city’s natural cooling infrastructure,” the association has said, in a letter which has also been marked to Revenue Minister and Panjim MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate and CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate.
“We are not objecting to the use of trees for decorative or advertising purposes. However, the use should not result in damage to the trees. The CCP, which is entrusted with managing the city infrastructure, needs to lay stringent guidelines for all event organizers and contractors and set up teams to detect and address any violations,” it has said.
It has noted that if something as basic as life itself is at risk, Panaji cannot be considered a Smart City.
