Assolna hasn’t forgotten its hero

ASSOLNA: While Lohia Maidan is named after Dr Ram Manohar Lohia after the historic June 18, 1946 meet, a turning point in Goa’s freedom struggle, villagers of Assolna are angry over the lethargic and disrespectful attitude towards preserving the Dr Lohia Chowk and Dr Julião Menezes memorial in Assolna.

“Assolna is the birth place of great revolutionary Dr Julião Menezes, who was instrumental in getting Dr Ram Manohar Lohia to Goa. Dr Menezes called some of his friends from Cuncolim and Margao to discuss how to start a strong revolt against the Portuguese under the leadership of Dr Lohia,” say Assolna residents.
Every year patriotic residents from Cuncolim, Assolna and neighbouring places visit Dr Menezes’ house on June 18 to make sure that the freedom fighter is remembered on ‘Kranti Din’.
Assolna villagers also criticized the authorities for allowing the sanctity of the place to be misused by allowing vegetable and fruit vendors to sit every Thursday at Lohia-Menezes Chowk.
