ASSOLNA: Assolna residents complain that the non-functional streetlights and lack of proper police patrolling, especially on the Assolna-Cavelossim Bridge, has yet again resulted in an increase of anti-social activities like chain snatchings, besides fatal accidents.

In the letter addressed to Electricity Department, the Assolna Sarpanch Xavier Almeida has drawn his attention towards “the poor upkeep of the streetlights in the panchayat area” and requested that necessary measures be undertaken to rectify the problem.
“The streetlights in the panchayat jurisdiction have not been repaired for quite a while. There is wear and tear all over the wiring mechanism. The state of the streetlights is more terrible amid the stormy season. Additionally, non-availability of proper lighting across the streets increases a further chance of accidents, besides resulting in increase of crime rate and other mishaps. Also, this has added dimness in the area as the villagers are found walking with a torch at night. There are regular episodes of chain snatchings at night especially for women who are in danger as they leave their homes at night. Thievery and robbery have turned into the order of the day. The criminals in the wake of perpetrating law violations exploit the obscurity and securely flee,” stated Almeida.
Former sarpanch and resident of Colevaddo-Assolna, Pedrina Cardozo divulged that at night, taking advantage of the lack of streetlights, groups of young boys gather in their vehicles drinking alcohol and later in an inebriated state break their glass bottles. Besides creating nuisance, they also leave behind a large pile of garbage near the ferry wharf and fishing ramp.
