At last, Margao municipal workers fall in line!

MARGAO: Finally some discipline prevailed amongst the Margao municipal workers on Monday following a stern warning from the civic body chief with regards to duty dereliction, who checked the attendance sheets of all the daily-wage employees with the details of works done for the day. 

Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Lyndon Pereira checked all the attendance sheets and details of the works carried out by the workers on duty. He even instructed the supervisors of the concerned sections to be present in the municipality with the details. 

It may be recalled that the chairperson had cautioned the municipal staff against concentrating only on receiving salaries without performing their duties and had asked the employees to work sincerely or face action, as on Saturday nearly 200 MMC workers were paraded in front of council head following complaints from councillors. 

Speaking to Herald the chairperson said as per the instructions, all supervisors on Monday submitted the attendance sheets of their respective gangs of the workers. 

“I have ensured that all the workers who were on 

duty have signed the muster roll. The attendance sheets and the works carried out will be checked thoroughly on a daily basis”, he said. 

“I have instructed the supervisors to provide the details of the workers for example what work is done and in which ward of the municipality. The workers will be paid as per work”, he stated. 

The chairperson said he will personally monitor the movement of on-duty drivers and even the functioning of the supervisors. 

At the recently held ordinary meeting, many councillors had accused the workers of receiving salaries without performing their duties and had demanded that the movements of these employees be monitored. It was brought to the notice of the Council that several workers mostly those on daily wages are not performing their duties after signing the muster roll.

Taking serious note of this, the civic body chief has taken the initiative to take to task all the workers and to monitor the work.
