MARGAO: Taking cognisance of a Herald report with regards to a treasure trove of 1,500-plus old Portuguese books craving attention in the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) library, the civic body has finally expedited the process to preserve the rare collection.
Former Curator of Central Library, Dr Carlos Fernandes will visit the library on July 20 to suggest the measures that need to be taken.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the civic body has already initiated the process of preserving the old Portuguese books in its library. Special glass cupboards will be purchased to safeguard the books from excess moisture, dust, and attack by insects.
The Chief Officer said all the preventive measures will be taken to protect the treasure trove of 1,500-plus Portuguese books.
According to sources, CO has initiated the process of preserving the old Portuguese books. “At the moment the civic body is in the process of taking suggestions from the expert. We have also spoken to the former curator of Goa Central Library Dr Carlos Fernandes in this regard. He will be visiting the library on July 20”, sources stated.
The Chief Officer has also accorded approval to purchase children’s books worth Rs 1 lakh.
It may be recalled that Herald in its edition dated July 2, 2021, had published a report on these old Portuguese books craving for attention. Taking note of the issue and expressing their concern, several book lovers had visited the library and even contacted Herald to inquire about the mentioned books. Few had even expressed their willingness to provide financial help.
However, MMC is expecting the right guidance from the former Curator Dr Carlos, as he did a remarkable job in maintaining the books in the Central Library.
