MARGAO: Following a lot of criticism from the public, especially people who live in the vicinity and customers, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) cleaned the wholesale fish market on Wednesday.
From hiring a JCB machine to remove all the overgrown shrubbery around the site, to scraping off all the grime and rotting waste material stuck to the ground, workers spent hours cleaning the market premises. Special efforts were also put in to try and remove the foul stench the market exudes, and ensure that any garbage dumped in and around the site is removed. The market grounds were also washed.
Meanwhile, the traditional fishermen and local vendors are waiting on the presentation they were promised by the SGPDA, about the new and upcoming wholesale fish market.
While nearly half of the work on the new market has been completed, the remaining portion will begin once the market is shifted to a temporary site.
However, the traditional fishermen from various parts of South Goa as well as the local fish vendors had plenty of concerns about the arrangements at the new wholesale market.
The local fishing community has demanded that they be prioritised over the wholesale fish traders and get quality space and an early morning slot at the market. They also want the fees they have to pay to operate from the market to be reduced.
