MARGAO: A group of enthusiastic students, driven by a passion for sustainable practices and agriculture, have embarked on a journey to enhance farming in the State.
These youngsters, in the 9 to 14 age group, were informed about the the vital role of responsible farming in addressing food security and environmental challenges at the Bal Krishi Utsav held at Margao on Saturday.
The event, organised by Ravindra Bhavan in collaboration with Mahila Mandal, Margao, saw the participation of around 60 students from schools like Popular High School, Mahila and Nutan High School, Damodar High School, and Hedgewar HS.
The event aimed to instill a commitment to land preservation and eco-friendly practices, inspiring students to join hands with local farmers to learn and implement innovative farming techniques.
In the open garden area of Ravindra Bhavan, farming experts Aditya Kesarkar and Yogesh Velip showcased practical gardening techniques, including potting saplings and nurturing them until they grow into healthy plants. Yamini Mazgaonkar, a student of Popular High School revealed that while she had some knowledge of farming practices from the elders in her family, the workshop provided her with in-depth insights.
“I’ve realised that agriculture could be a promising career choice, I’m seriously considering pursuing it,” she said.
Aditya Kesarkar emphasised the importance of promoting farming among the student community. He noted, “Choosing agriculture as a career has immense potential. It’s crucial to revive the farming practices that our forefathers sustained.”
Manohar Borkar, Vice-President of Ravindra Bhavan-Margao, stated that the idea for the Bal Krishi Utsav was proposed by Kiran Fatarpekar, a teacher from Popular High School, and gained support from Mahila Mandal-Margao.
