Attack on cops:Babush among 37 to appear before JMFC

PANJIM, APRIL 7 Thirty-seven accused including Education Minister and unattached legislator from Taleigao Atanasio Monserrate, will have to appear before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Panjim on Thursday with regards to the violent mob attack on Panjim police station in February 2008.

Thirty-seven accused including Education Minister and unattached legislator from Taleigao Atanasio Monserrate, will have to appear before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Panjim on Thursday with regards to the violent mob attack on Panjim  police station in February 2008.
Notices have gone to the 37 accused to remain present before JMFC. The  list  of   accused includes  Taleigao Sarpanch Jenifer Monserrate, former Mayor Tony Rodrigues,   current  Mayor Caroline Po, corporators such Daya Karapurkar, Uday Madkaikar among others.
All face charges for rioting and attack on public servants with dangerous weapons, causing mischief by causing damage to public property and also use of fire and explosives.
Police had registered first information reports (FIRs) against 524 people including 24 known persons  then. Later, the case was  handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on demand from the Taleigao  MLA who went  to the High Court  alleging police  atrocities .
Around 32 policemen were injured, six of them seriously, while a couple of two-wheelers in front of the police station were burnt in the attack on the town police station by an unruly mob on February 19 evening, police claimed.
