MARGAO: Authorities from various government departments togther cracked down on illegal food stalls at old bus stand at Margao, selling unhygenic food items, which posed severe health risk to people.
A joint inspection was carried out by the Urban Health Centre, along with Margao Municipality, Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), besides Horticulture Corporation and Margao Traffic Cell following a request by GOACAN.
The team found that the illegal food stalls were selling snacks like ros-omelet, vada pav, and other food items at the bust stand in unghygenic conditions.
After detecting the illegalities, FDA issued notices on the spot to several stall owners for violating the food safety norms.
GOACAN has urged the District Collector to consider this place as a food hub.
Several stalls operating at the bus stand don’t have the trade license from either Margao Municipality or from the FDA. Foul stench emanated from the rotting waste food thrown away by by the eateries. Severeal abondones vehicles involved in accidents were also seen dumped at the old bus stand.
Rolan Martins, Convenor, GOACAN said, “Our purpose for the site inspection was to bring all the concerned departments together in order to resolve the issues here..”
“We will be writing to the District Collector to consider this area as a food hub and will ask the transport department to improve the condition for bus drivers and conductors, besides.” he added
He said they are not against anyone doing business over there, but to improve the conditions.
