MARGAO: On June 24, PWD officials descended on a residential locality at Borda to disconnect water supply to a residency for letting out sewage into the open and causing health hazard to the neighbourhood.
The water supply to the residency was disconnected exactly at around 11.30 am upon the order passed by Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik.
Hours later, however, the supply was restored the very same PWD officials, this time acting as per the telephonic instructions of the District Collector, South.
While the water disconnection and re-connection is a subject of debate in the corridors of the Margao Municipal Council and the District Collectorate, residents close to the Residency are yet to get any relief from the authorities till date, even as they demanded action against the erring housing complex.
Margao Municipal Ward Councillor Tito Cardozo, representing Borda area, told the media that the situation around the residency is indeed a matter for concern. “The entire neighbourhood is facing a health hazard. Sewage disposal from the residency has raised a stink in the neighbourhood. The residency has promised to connect the building to the nearby sewage line, but it should be asked to immediately empty the septic tank or face action,” Cardozo added.
Incidentally, in her order calling for disconnection of water supply to the residency, which was later overruled by the District Collector, the MMC Chief Officer had categorically blamed the residency for diverting the dirty waste water from the soak pit to the adjoining property, causing nuisance to the public.
The Margao Urban Health Centre had also issued a notice to the residency under the Goa Public Health Act to stop discharging sewage in the open, but residents of the neighbourhood wonder why the authorities concerned are dilly dallying in cracking a whip against the residency  till date.
