PANJIM: The National Highways
Authority of India (NHA) along with the State government will conduct a three-day
inspection along national highways to identify sites to set up garbage
collection stations.
With garbage strewn along
the NH getting piling up daily, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB)
monitoring the NH cleaning process by private contractors, had proposed setting
up of 10 large garbage collection stations along the highways. Currently, there
are 60 collection centres along the highways.
The Board, along with the
officials of NHA, Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and
contractors – BVG India Ltd and Mahalsa Services met on Monday to identify locations
along the highways where collection centres can be set up. The meeting also
decided to utilize the PWD shed at Farmadgudi, Ponda for processing dry waste.
Speaking to Herald soon
after the meeting, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that NHA officials
along with GSPCB, GSIDC and PWD will conduct the three-day inspection from
Tuesday. “The waste will be segregated by plastic, paper, tin,” he said.
The waste collected will be
sent to Sarvana bailing station at Bicholim, and from there it will be taken to
Vasavadatta Cement.
In a bid to regulate garbage collection along highways it
was decided to monitor the cleaning process, undertaken by various private contractors.
