MARGAO: With the impending public meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Margao, authorities are taking measures to address the persistent issue of beggars in the vicinity, even though a comprehensive action plan is yet to be formulated.
Srinet Kothwale, Additional Collector I, announced stringent vigilance on beggars in and around the venue, with a particular focus on two major traffic junctions: Verna Industrial Estate and Old Market Circle in Margao.
The problem of beggars and migrants sleeping on footpaths has posed a significant challenge for authorities over the past several years, with a definitive solution proving elusive. In response to directives from the South Goa District Collector, concerned authorities recently conducted a drive against beggars and migrants in Verna Industrial Estate and Margao.
“While a comprehensive action plan is pending, strict vigilance on beggars’ movements will be maintained in light of the PM’s visit,” stated Kothwale.
Emphasising the non-negotiable security of the Prime Minister, he added, “Necessary instructions will be issued to concerned authorities, including the police, to ensure proper handling of nuisances by beggars and migrant groups in and around the venue.”
According to Kothwale, there is an urgent need for discussions among all concerned authorities to formulate permanent solutions to the growing number of beggars in the locality.
The issue has drawn public frustration, with citizens of Fatorda and Old Market-Margao expressing their concerns and demanding a more serious approach from authorities.
Recently, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) came down on the South Goa Planning and Development Authority, for allowing beggars and vagrants, along with vulnerable children, to live on the open grounds it owns.
GSCPR also expressed concern about the substandard management of open spaces during public events and fairs in Margao, leading to migrant families living in close proximity to open drains and walls, exposing their children to hazardous living conditions and health risks.
