MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council’s resolution to erect a statue of former MLA Babu Naik at the Old Market circle has hit a big block.
An officer attached to the National highway administration has told the Margao Municipal Chief Officer that no statue can be erected anywhere within the national highway land in view of the judgement of the Supreme Court. Copies of the letter have been forwarded to the District Magistrate South, the DySP, traffic and the Assistant Engineer, NH.
The National Highway official recalled that the Supreme Court was clear in its direction that state government shall not grant any permission for the installation of any statue or construction of any structure on public roads, pavements, sideways and other public utility places.
The Margao Municipal Council at its meeting held on August 18 last had unanimously approved the proposal to install the statue of late Babu Naik as a fitting tribute to the former MLA. The civic body had also passed a resolution to install a statue of late Floriano Vaz, who fell victim to police bullets during the Konkani agitation, at the Gogol traffic junction.
