PANJIM: Congress candidate for the Panjim by-polls and city Mayor Surendra Furtado is confident that Congress’ St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate and his wife Jennifer, who is the Taleigao MLA, will support his candidature in the forthcoming by-polls.
Furtado filed his nomination for the by-polls, scheduled on February 13, before the North Goa returning officer on Thursday afternoon. Furtado in the past had contested from Panjim twice and lost.
After filing his nomination papers, Furtado told the media that he was confident that the Monserrates would campaign for him in the by-polls.
“Babush (Monserrate) will definitely join me in my campaign. There is no doubt of that. Both Babush and Jennifer are with the Congress and with me,” Furtado said.
Furtado also claimed that the people of Panjim are with him and he would transform the city into a model city. “The run-away MLA has done development in only 12 wards and not for Panjim city,” he stated.
Furtado said that he would continue to be the Panjim Mayor as it is not an office of profit and he is an elected representative.
The nomination was filed in the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Dr A Chellakumar, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro and Congress legislative party leader Pratapsing Rane.
