PANJIM: Cracks have developed between St Curz MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate and former Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado, with both deciding to field separate panels for the upcoming Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections, scheduled on March 6.
Sources said Monserrate’s decision not to project a mayoral candidate has not gone well with Furtado, who was expecting to projected as the next mayor of Panjim.
Monserrate told media persons that his panel will go independently. “Furtado has only two seats and that is not a big issue,” he said. Sources said Monserrate is not in the favour of Furtado as the next city Mayor and is instead looking for a fresh young face.
The CCP elections are scheduled to be held on March 6, with the process for filing of nomination to begin from February 10.
Monserrate is expected to announce his candidates a day after the ward reservation process is notified. The MLA will introduce many new faces this election. There are currently 15 corporators backed by him, excluding Surendra and his wife Ruth. Furtado was not available for comments.
