PANJIM: The Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate-panel made a clean sweep in the Taleigao Village Panchayat by winning all the 11 wards in the just held elections. The Taleigao’s strongman has given the credit of this win to his wife Jennifer, also the constituency’s legislator.
“I would like to thank the people of Taleigao constituency. The credit basically goes to Jennifer because I did not campaign. She has done all the hard work along with the people of her constituency. It is their hard work and the trust of the people,” Monserrate said after the final results were declared at the counting centre – Bal Bhavan on Monday.
He announced that Agnelo Santana Cirilo Da Cunha, who was elected unopposed from ward number 3, would be the Sarpanch of Taleigao Panchayat while Regha Pai will be the Deputy Sarpanch. The winning members led by Monserrate held a rally across the constituency to celebrate their win.
The winners of Monserrate panel included Regha Pai (ward 1) securing 1053 votes while Terezinha Barreto (ward 2) got 1154 votes polled in her favour, Mahadev Kunkolkar (ward 4) 506 votes, Saraswati Murgaonkar (ward 5) 440 votes, Estella D’Souza (ward 6) 403 votes, Janu Rosario (ward 7) 1054 votes, Maria Fernandes (ward 8) 905 votes, Raguvir Kuncolencar (ward 9) 700 votes, Santosh Chopdekar (ward 10) 773 votes and Sydney Barreto (ward 11) 719 votes. Kuncolencar who was the only BJP candidate to win the Taleigao VP elections in 2014, had switched to Monserrate-panel and tasted victory yet again. With this, Monserrate panel has won for the fourth consecutive time.
The counting of the ballot papers began at 8am and completed before 11am. The election held on Sunday witnessed 70.90 percent voting, which was less than the total 76.40 percent voting recorded in its previous election in 2014.
The highest voting 83.67 percent was recorded in ward number 7 and the lowest 45.57 percent was in ward number 6. Out of total 16209 voters across 11 wards and 22 polling booths, 7845 were males and 8364 were females.
