PANJIM: A 25-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl in 108 ambulance on Tuesday.
According to information given by the Health Department, the woman from Tilamur-Fatorda was referred from District Hospital, Margao to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim. The patient’s gestational age was 37 weeks and had diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Swati Ghatage gave left lateral position to the patient and shifted.
While en route the patient’s contractions increased and was in crowning stage. The EMT immediately took ERCP conference and told the pilot Rajendra to stop the ambulance at a safe place. The baby was delivered spontaneously and post neonatal care was given by the EMT.
A healthy baby girl was delivered at 7:25 am while, injection Oxytocin was given and cord clamping was done by the EMT. Later, EMT Swati handed over the baby to the father and shifted the patient to the GMC, Bambolim.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane tweeted, “The team at GVK EMRI 108 is always at it on their mission of saving lives. The EMT responded to a patient in labour while on their way to GMC this morning. The EMT performed the delivery inside the ambulance after carefully following the doctor’s instructions. I’m happy to report that both the mother and the baby are safe and have been shifted to GMC. Kudos to EMT Swati Ghatage for her swift action.”
