MARGAO: In response to concerns raised by petitioner Antonio Alvares regarding the ineffective measures to prevent sewage water from entering nullahs and contaminating Salpem Lake, the High Court issued directives on Tuesday for an urgent inspection.
The inspection on Wednesday morning will involve authorities such as the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Margao Municipal Council, and the Sewerage Corporation.
Antonio Alvares, the petitioner, expressed dissatisfaction with the existing measures during the court hearing. He highlighted that no substantial changes had been observed in preventing or identifying points of sewage discharge into the nullahs, resulting in the pollution of Salpem Lake and the River Sal since the case was filed.
Alvares specifically mentioned concerns about the malfunctioning sewage treatment plant at Shirvodem, noting that raw sewage was being directly released into the nullah leading to the River Sal. He emphasised that while the authorities had presented a drainage plan, they had yet to identify and address the specific points of sewage discharge. The lawyer representing the Margao Municipal Council informed the court that they are currently in the process of revising the drainage plan.
Affected citizens and villagers from Shirvodem are expected to be present during the inspection.
