MARGAO: The First Additional Civil Judge Senior Division and Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao on Friday issued bailable warrants against then Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president Dayanand Narvekar, former treasurer Rama Shankardas and Gangaram Bishe in connection with the One Day International cricket fake ticket scam reported, at Margao, in April 2001.
Narvekar and eight others namely GCA Secretary Vinod ‘Balu’ Phadke, Rama Shankardas, ticket contractor Chinmay Falari and his brother Devdutt Falari have been chargesheeted by the court in connection with the alleged ‘fake’ ticket scam during the ODI match played between India and Australia at Fatorda stadium on April 6, 2001.
Eknath Naik, brother-in-law of Narvekar, Gangaram Bishe, Venkatesh Desai and Joaquim Pires were the other four accused charged under different sections of the Indian Penal Code including printing and selling of fake tickets, criminal conspiracy and cheating the public.
The ticket scam came to light after tickets outnumbered the number of seating arrangements during the India-Australia ODI cricket match in 2001 and police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd outside the stadium after eligible ticket holders created ruckus when they were not allowed to watch the match.
