Bailancho Ekvott Raises Alarm Over Women’s Safety in Goa

In a recent statement issued by NGO Bailancho Ekvott, concerns regarding the safety of women in Goa have been brought to the forefront. Despite the rhetoric of a “safe city,” incidents of harassment, stalking, and assault persist, painting a grim picture of the challenges faced by women on a daily basis.

The NGO highlighted a distressing incident that occurred on a public bus, a space that should ensure safety for all commuters. A working woman was stalked and inappropriately touched by a man on the bus, which escalated into a physical assault when she raised an alarm. Shockingly, the perpetrator also attempted to assault her minor son. However, commendably, the bus conductor intervened, preventing the assailant from escaping and promptly alerting the authorities.

The incident underscores the urgent need to address the unsafe environment that women encounter while commuting. Every woman should feel secure without the fear of harassment, emphasizing the imperative of enhancing security measures.

Moreover, the reporting process following the incident was arduous, exacerbating the victim’s distress. Bailancho Ekvott advocates for streamlined reporting mechanisms to ensure swift action in such cases, minimizing further trauma for the victims.

The NGO stressed that such incidents are not isolated and are all too common, affecting women of all ages and marital statuses. They called for decisive action to confront the harsh realities of women’s safety and to implement measures to address the issue effectively.

In addition to incidents on buses, Bailancho Ekvott highlighted cases of sexual assault on minor children occurring on trains, urging higher authorities to take proactive steps to prevent child abuse and enhance safety for women and child travelers. Specifically, they called for increased vigilance from the railway protection force, especially during night-time journeys.

Looking towards the future, the NGO emphasized the need for Goa to prioritize women’s safety to truly achieve inclusive development. They urged reforms within the public transportation system, including consistent monitoring of private buses and ensuring operators are trained and sensitized to women’s safety concerns. Furthermore, they questioned Goa’s readiness to safeguard its daughters and their future compared to neighboring states that have implemented progressive measures like free bus travel for women.

Bailancho Ekvott’s call for action serves as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and security of women in Goa.
