Chairman of the district disaster Management Authority and District Collector, Venancio Furtado passed an order declaring Baina as unsafe and called for evacuation. Furtado informed that the district administration does not want to take any chances on the situation at Baina and Katem, both hit by soil erosion. “I have personally visited Baina on three occasions and after consulting with experts, I have come to the conclusion that the area is not safe for human habitation during the rains,” he said. Replying to a question, he said a survey conducted by the district administration at Baina revealed that around 370 individuals comprising of 74 families have been residing in the katcha structures.
Plea before DMA to disqualify Gonzaco
MARGAO: A petition seeking disqualification of Margao Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello has been filed before the Director of Municipal Administration for alleged construction of illegal structures and payment of improper house tax to the Council.The petitioner from Madel Savio Dias prayed to the DMA to direct the Chairperson representing Ward No 8 of the Margao Municipal Council to immediately demolish the illegal structures allegedly built in road widening area without any notices or hearing.Dias further prayed that the Chairperson be disqualified from the post of Councillor with immediate effect and that the Council levies appropriate tax on the Councillor’s bungalow. He maintained that the two sheds built by the Councillor are being used for his commercial activity and used as a bar and restaurant and a kitchen. Dias said that though he had filed a petition before the Margao Municipal Chief Officer against Gonzaco, the Chief Officer only delaying hearing of the petition, forcing him to withdraw the petition and approach the DMA.
Hubby sentenced for attempt on wife’s life
MARGAO: The south Goa district and sessions Judge, Nutan Sadessai on Monday sentenced accused Basavraj Malgond, 39, resident of New Vaddem-Vasco and native of Karnataka to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 2 years and to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 for attempting to murder his wife Renuka. According to prosecution the incident occurred on January 2, 2013 at 10.30 pm in the rented room at New Vaddem when the accused in a state of intoxication assaulted his wife Renuka, before dousing her in kerosene and setting her ablaze. Renuka sustained injuries on her face, hands and legs and was rushed to Chicalim hospital from where she was moved to GMC. Based on the complaint of brother-in-law of victim, Hanumanta Jargaddi the police arrested the accused on January 31. 2013.
Witness in Scarlet case to testify
PANJIM: Six years after the death of British tourist Scarlet Keeling Eden, CBI will examine its second key witness in the case – Michael Mannion alias Mike Masala through video conferencing on August 11. The deposition from United Kingdom will be held in the North District & Sessions Court, Panjim. The British national had seen the 15-year-old girl with two alleged accused – Samson D’Souza and Placido Carvalho hours before her bruised semi-naked body was found on the Anjuna shore on February 18, 2008. In 2012, Mannion had said he was ready to come down to Goa to testify as a witness only if the prosecution reimbursed him for loss of his salary there and expenses incurred. He had also apprehended threat to his life. After his testimony, CBI will examine three officers of Goa Police – PSI Laxi Amonkar, PI Braz Menezes and PI Nerlon Albuquerque as their deposition was objected to by the defense on Monday. The defense demanded the police officers testify once Mannion is examined.
