Baina hutment dwellers falter on proof of residence

Only 34 out of 155 manage to furnish documents

VASCO: Only 34 out of 155 occupants, who filed a writ petition in the High Court of Bombay at Goa, submitted documents to support their claim that they have been residing at Baina prior to 1995.
The writ petition was filed by Baina Resident’s Welfare Association seeking relief from demolition ordered by the Mormugao Mamlatdar under Goa Land (prohibition on construction) Act, 1995.
After hearing all the parties to the writ petition, the High Court passed an order on June 17, 2015, directing the Mormugao Mamlatdar to hear the parties, grant them opportunity to produce evidence in support of their claim and then pass a fresh reasoned order. The High Court also directed the petitioners to appear before the Mormugao Mamletdar on June 23, to present their case.
Following the High Court direction, the Mamlatdar gave seven days to the occupants of Baina hutments to file their documents in support of their claim that they have been residing at Baina prior to 1995.
However, only 34 occupants could file their papers with the seven day, while the rest were granted 15 more days to file their papers, but failed to do so.
Sources at the Mamlatdar office informed that, the Mamlatdar would now stop accepting documents from those who failed to submit proof within the given time and would start verification of the submitted documents from Wednesday.
The report of the proceeding and documents submitted by the occupants would be submitted before the South Goa Collector for further action, the sources said.
