VASCO: Stating that the hearing of the migrants staying in illegal shanties at Baina beach is being conducted, South Goa Collector Venancio Furtado added that action would be initiated against the illegal shanties on completion of the hearing.
Furtado was speaking to Herald after his routine visit to Sada Sub-Jail on Thursday.
“Mormugao Mamlatdar Laximikant Desai is conducting the hearing and is verifying the documents of the migrants. Once the hearing is completed, the migrants will be evicted,” said Furtado.
Furtado said the eviction notices issued to 205 migrant families staying in illegal shanties at Baina beach will not be withdrawn, as the shanties are in violation of CRZ norms.
When asked about his visit to Sada Sub-Jail and inspection of the plot allotted to Goa Shipyard Ltd at Headland Sada, Furtado said it was a routine inspection, as he is part of the inspection committee of the Sada Sub-Jail.
Furtado further said he along with Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar inspected the Sada Sub-Jail and took stock of the jail premises and the security. “I have also inspected the plot allotted to Goa Shipyard Ltd by the government,’ he added.
“Of the total land allotted to GSL, a portion of the land was then allotted to construct the Sada Sub-Jail and today’s visit was to find out the area of the remaining land with GSL and their plan of action,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 205 occupants of illegal shanties at Baina beach have decided to submit a memorandum demanding rehabilitation to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on September 5. According to some migrants, who were standing in a queue at the office of their advocate to sign the memorandum, they will submit the same to Parrikar on Friday, demanding to know from him why their illegal shanties are targeted and why the government has not worked out a rehabilitation plan before demolition. The migrants further said the government should first rehabilitate them and then demolish their illegal shanties. For the last three days, these migrants have been protesting outside the Mormugao Mamlatdar’s office raising slogans and demanding rehabilitation.
