PORVORIM:  In a bid to avoid a possible disaster in the future, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Friday announced that the Baina hutment site near the high tide line would be declared a ‘Disaster Prone Zone’ and all the hutments along the area removed for Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations.
“The incident that happened yesterday is an eye-opener and we need to look into it very seriously. To avoid possible future disaster, it is important to declare the area as disaster prone zone,” Parsekar said on the floor of the House referring to the Thursday night incident wherein three houses and one toilet collapsed at Baina beach due to rough sea conditions.
“Also we have issued demolition order to all 121 structures and the same will be removed in due course,” the Chief Minister said replying to a Zero Hour mention tabled by BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral.
Cabral demanded that the Baina site be declared as disaster prone zone to avoid any natural and environmental disaster.
Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar said that all the constructions were in violation of CRZ norms. “The Union Ministry has imposed CRZ lines and one had to abide by it. CRZ regulations are very important and its violation is not acceptable,” he said.
