PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has granted consent to establish the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant (ISWMP) at Bainguinim, considered to be the centralised facility for the State that will treat 250 tonnes of waste per day.
The facility costing over Rs 240 crore would be in operation in two shifts per day, with six working hours per shift and will be functional for 320 days in a year.
GSPCB at its Board meeting on December 15, decided to grant the consent to establish under the Air Act and Water Act to Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) for the proposed 250 tonnes per day integrated waste management facility.
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) had in 2009 acquired 1.71 lakh sq mtrs of land at Bainguinim to set up the ISWMP. However, this was caught in a legal battle following an objection raised by the local village panchayat.
In 2017, the project was handed over to GWMC with CCP transferring the land to the corporation. The facility received the Environment Clearance (EC) in January.
In October, GWMC invited tenders for pre-qualification for the design, engineering, financing, construction, supply, installation, commissioning, performance run and operation and maintenance bid from qualified bidders.
Meanwhile, the Board has decided to direct the department of industries to ensure that the manufacturing units collect and dispose of all pet bottles, which could be seen strewn at all places.
