MARGAO: After the Citizen Herald reported the sorry plight at the dry waste baling station behind the Margao Municipal Council, the chairperson and chief officer on Monday inspected the site and assured that the baling machine at the old fish market will be started from Tuesday.

Cedric Da Costa, a Citizen Herald writer had shown with photos that the Margao town was sitting on a health time bomb due to the big pile of waste behind the Margao municipality.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai had tweeted that he has informed the chairperson of MMC to inspect the site.

Chairperson Pooja Naik informed that due to the pandemic the waste couldn’t be sent to the cement plants for disposal.

“The baling of waste will start from Tuesday,” she informed.

“The machines have remained non-functional for the want of a covering shade for the set up. Work was given to a contractor for the covering of the baling machine with a shade. But he has not honoured it. We have issued him a show cause notice,” the chairperson mentioned.

Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has informed that three baling machines out of the four started at Sonsoddo. Minor issues have been sorted now and machines have been put to work. Another three baling machines will be started from Tuesday of which two are at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) and one at old fish market.

He also mentioned that remediation of legacy waste will be started shortly which was stopped due to heavy rains.
