MARGAO: Claiming that constant traffic congestion was posing a hazard to students, the National Students Union of India, Quepem block, has demanded the prohibition of the movement of heavy vehicles on the Cuncolim Highway during college hours.
On Wednesday, a delegation led by Rushab Phaldesai, CES College Unit Incharge and President of NSUI-Quepem block, submitted a memorandum to the office of traffic police at Margao.
Speaking to reporters, Phaldesai said he requested the authorities to divert or halt the movement of heavy vehicles on the Cuncolim Highway NH 66 during college hours 7.30 to 9 am and at 12.30 to 2 pm, as there are a lot of traffic jams which cause hardships to students commuting to and from college and also pose the danger of accidents.
“However, if the diversion or halting of heavy vehicles is not possible, then traffic police should be deployed at all possible junctions, from Cuncolim bus stand to Cuncolim petrol pump opposite the Municipal Hall,” he said.
NSUI requested the authorities to understand the seriousness of the problem and come out with measures that will give relief to the student community.
