MARGAO: The South Goa District Collector has imposed a ban on interstate transportation of cattle into the district as cases of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) were flaring up among domestic animals in the neighbouring states..
The notification issued by Collector and District Magistrate South Goa, Jyoti Kumari IAS, has banned on importing cattle from other states with immediate effect from January 21 and will last for sixty days. The decision has been taken in the wake of rising influence of lumpy disease among the cattle but however only the Qureshi Meat Traders Association from Mapusa have been permitted to buy healthy buffaloes from other states.
The cause action in this regard arose after the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary services alerted the Collector that infected animals were still spotted around in the State although the situation was under control. It was also brought to the notice of the Collector that the LSD outbreak had vastly affected animals in the other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan and bringing in animals from here would worsen the situation.
While the ban has been imposed as a precautionary measure, only the Qureshi Meat Traders Association have been permitted to buy healthy buffaloes. The buffaloes after health check-up would be taken directly to the meat complex at Usgao and if they are found to be diseased there then they would have to be left at where they were brought from. The Collector has appealed to everyone to cooperate with the order.
LSD is a viral infection affecting bovines and is spread by pests like ticks, mosquitoes and other blood sucking pests and causes fever and nodules on the skin resulting in the death of cattle.
