Unswept staircases and landing-places are still a common sight in many buildings. You find them littered with many things including dog’s poo. You may not notice them when you are using the lift but when you are forced to use the staircase, you have to watch every step. The situation is worse at night when you have to grope your way because the electric bulb meant to light the staircase will either be fused or missing from the holder. Being a common area, everyone feels it is not his concern to keep the staircase clean.
The situation is different in buildings occupied by apartment owners. Their housing societies take care, but public and tenanted buildings leave much to be desired. A small contribution from the building owner or the tenants could make a big difference. “Nitoll Goem” is a dream. It is achievable but as a serious start, we will have to first keep our building/house and its surrounding clean.
