The Ganv Rakhon Jagruti Manch’s call for a Curchorem Bandh on Thursday to protest against the proposed four-lane road from Tilamol to Sanguem Court was successful, as all shops and establishments remaining closed for the day.
According to reports, there was spontaneous response to the bandh from the people from all walks of life.
It was also decided to lead a morcha at the Secreteriat on February 1.
All the shops and establishments remained closed except for banks, pharmacies, post office and petrol pumps. All trucks and buses remained off the roads. People blocked the roads by parking their cars and two-wheelers on the roads.
In the morning, hundreds of people gathered near Dr Ambedkar Chowk. Among those who addressed the people were Sanguem MLA Vasudev Gaonkar, former minister Domnic Fernandes, ZP member Rosario Fernandes, social worker Suhas Sanvordekar, Nilesh Cabral, ex-sarpanch Nilkant Naik, ex-councillor Paresh Bhende, Sanjay Dessai of Consumer Forum, Shivaji Tilve of Truck Owners Association, Adv Atrey Kakodkar and others.
Addressing the people, MLA Gaonkar accused the State government of supporting the mine owners against the welfare of the people.
“The bypass road can be constructed within 6 months, but the government is not serious about the demand of the people for bypass road,” alleged Gaonkar.
Later the people took out a rally which proceeded from Curhcorem market and stopped near Curchorem MLA Shyam Satardekar’s residence. There, the speakers again spoke against the MLA and shouted anti-MLA slogans. People also burnt an effigy of the MLA. Later, the agitators decided to extend wholehearted support to Suhas Sanvordekar, who will go on an indefinite hunger strike from February 1 in front of Curchorem Police station.
Police teams from South Goa as well as a police team from the State Reserve Police were summoned to maintain law and order.
Quepem Mamlatdar Sudin Natu, DySP Rohidas Patre and Curchorem PI Bhanudas Dessai were present to take stock of the situation.
