PANJIM: The Goa Bank Employees Association (GBEA) has urged the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) for restrictions in bank services and reduction in business hours in view of spike in COVID-19 cases in the State.

In a letter to the SLBC, the GBEA General Secretary A M Pereira said that all bank branches and establishments are potential hotspots for spreading the virus. The employees, while at work, remain in close proximity of those who enters the branch premises for transacting business for extended period of time as opposed to an infected person passing a fellow walker on the street for a few seconds. As such, front desk employees are more vulnerable to the contagion.
Stating that the frontline workers/employees are worried over the safety of their health, Pereira said that since the onset of the COVID-19 cases last year, over a lakh of officers and employees in the country were infected, suffered and over a thousand succumbed to the disease. In the current second wave sweeping across the nation, the Association is distressed to note that already thousands of bank officers and employees are infected and several bank employees and officer have died.
