Bauxite stones lying by the roadsides pose danger to two-wheeler riders

VASCO: Social worker Shankar Polji has expressed anger over leakage of bauxite stones from the cargo trucks between Sada square, Baina flyover and Varunpuri square. He and locals have demanded to remove the stones before a mishap takes place. Polji himself removed some of the stones on Monday from Baina flyover with a broom to draw attention of the authorities concerned and has threatened to lie on the road if action is not taken.

The bauxite imported at Mormugao Port is then transported to Karnataka in trucks. The trucks go from Sada, Baina flyover and then Varunpuri. Stones leak from the trucks throughout the way due to lack of proper precautions. The motorists, especially, the two-wheeler riders, face inconvenience as these stones increase the chances of bikes skidding. “The Mormugao Port Authority and transporters should have paid attention to this and removed the stones immediately. However, it seems that the authorities concerned are probably waiting for a mishap to occur and only then they will act,” said Polji.
