Beach clean-up team mobilised to ensure eco-friendly Ganesh idol immersion

VASCO: With the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, preparations are in full swing to ensure the safe and eco-friendly immersion of Ganesha idols at Baina beach. A dedicated team of more than 50 volunteers has been mobilised to collect flowers and Nirmalya (ritual offerings) from the beach after the idol immersions.

The approach road leading to Baina beach is currently undergoing necessary preparations to facilitate smooth access for the festivities. In addition, a team of lifeguards and standby vehicles will be stationed on the beach to prevent any untoward incidents. Adequate illumination will also be arranged on the beach during the Ganesh immersion days to enhance safety and visibility.

On Tuesday, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar conducted a joint inspection of the immersion site at Baina, accompanied by various authorities, including Deputy Collector Bhagwant ‘Pratik’ Karmali, Mormugao Mamlatdar, Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer Jayant Tari, ward councillor Shraddha Amonkar, and officials from the police and electricity departments.

After the inspection, Amonkar expressed confidence in the authorities’ efforts to maximize precautions and ensure a smooth Ganesh idol immersion process.

Amonkar highlighted the challenge of waste, particularly flower waste and Nirmalya (flower petals, leaves, and other decoration materials used on Ganesh idols), being dumped into water bodies and on the beach.

To address this issue, a team of approximately 50 volunteers has been tasked with collecting all the waste materials left on the beach and ensuring proper disposal.

During the immersion days, the Baina beach area will be brightly illuminated by the electricity department, and additional lifeguards along with a standby vehicle will be deployed at Baina to prevent any untoward incidents, especially during high tide conditions in the seas, Amonkar added.
