PANJIM: The beach cleaning mission of Goa government will kick-start from Monday, which will be carried out manually until the monsoon season.
Private agencies – in the north and south – will conduct the exercise on around 60 out of total 105 km stretch.
“Initially the cleaning will be carried out manually. After the rainy season, the beaches would be cleaned mechanically. We will start the mechanized cleaning only if NGOs (working in the field of environment protection) are satisfied,” Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar said on Sunday.
The tourism department has already formed two committees for each of the two districts to certify that the beaches are clean before government clears the bill of the agencies contracted for the cleaning work.
“Under the project, strict vigil and a daily reporting system will be undertaken. Combing of wet and dry sands of the beaches depending on the population on the beach will also be carried out on a daily basis ensuring that beach beds are clean, safe for barefoot walkers.”
The government had recently approved comprehensive management of cleanliness on all beaches of Goa. As per the plan, garbage will be segregated into bio-degradable substances and plastic and non-recyclable waste before its safe disposal. Well-maintained litter bins at an interval of every 100 meters for the benefit of tourists will also be placed.
