PANJIM: While tenders for the State’s beach safety management is yet to be finalised, the tourism department is proposing to extend the contract with the existing company which lapses on June 15, upto July 31, 2013.

“A file has been moved to the government on this matter,” said a tourism official.

Tenders which were floated in May this year to appoint an agency to handle the beach safety and lifeguard services along Goa’s coastline is behind schedule. The existing contract ends on June 15 and the tendering process is likely to be finalised only by the end of this month.

“The last date for bids to be submitted is June 13,” said the official stating that the agency would be selected thereafter with the concurrence of the finance and law department.

In the meantime the department is issuing advisories to tourists not to venture into the sea during the months of June, July, August and September.

“If they wish to swim they could do so in hotels,” said this official.

The Indian Reserve Battalion which is patrolling the beaches will also be asked to keep an eye on tourists visiting the beaches and prevent them from venturing into the waters.
