The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred by two weeks the hearing on a plea filed by Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, seeking his transfer from Tihar Jail in Delhi to a prison in Punjab. A Bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice N Kotiswar Singh adjourned the matter as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was unavailable. Hawara, a Babbar Khalsa terrorist serving a life sentence, cited good conduct in prison and family reasons, stating that his daughter resides in Punjab. He also pointed out that all co-accused are lodged in Punjab jails and that the Director General (Prisons) had recommended his transfer in 2016. Hawara claimed no case is pending against him in Delhi and said his incarceration there prevents him from attending proceedings in Punjab.
