VASCO: The Port Town’s famous Vaddem Lake, which was beautified by spending crores of rupees, has been infested by green moss and algae.
The locals have stopped visiting the spot due to the foul odour emanating from the water, mosquito menace, non-functional lights and sprinklers. The government had spent crores of rupees on illumination and Vaddem Lake’s beautification and all this appears to have gone down the drain.
To add to the water contamination, plastic waste too has been dumped in the lake. Two years after its inauguration, the authorities have turned a blind eye on the lake’s maintenance, which has resulted in the rampant growth of moss and algae. Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Kaskar said the matter is sub judice as there is a dispute over the authority.
It may be recalled that the parishioners of St Andrew’s Church along with Vaddem locals had cleaned the lake in April. St Andrew’s Church parish priest had also urged the visitors to keep the lake and its surrounding clean.
