PANJIM: Beef was not available to consumers on Wednesday, a day after the High Court, in an interim order permitted the slaughter of unproductive animals with certain safeguards.

Beef did not reach the counters of beef stalls in the markets on Wednesday, since the Goa Meat Complex does not have animals to slaughter, according to beef sellers.

Traders have cited the fact that the court has not decided the fate of the 131 animals that are in the meat complex and unavailability of other animals, as the reason for the beef shortage.

“There are no animals to slaughter. Today all meat traders have downed their shutters due to unavailability of beef,” Anwar Bepari, a meat seller told Herald.

When asked how long it would take for beef to become available to consumers, Bepari said, that would depend on the market and the availability of animals for slaughter.

“There are 131 animals at the Goa Meat Complex on which the court is yet to pronounce an order. Already two of the animals from among them have died due to starvation. They are not feeding them properly,” Bepari said.

Given the shortage of animals for slaughter, it is estimated that it may take at least another couple of days before beef stocks become available in the markets.
