Beggars make Fatorda their ‘home’

Concerned locals come across several beggars sleeping on the roadside; want authorities to initiate steps to tackle the menace once and for all either by removing or lodging these beggars in shelter homes

MARGAO: The beggar menace has once again come to haunt Fatorda, as residents expressed concerns when they found several beggars sleeping on the roadside including a footpath of

National Highway in the area and demanded that the authorities concerned initiate immediate steps to tackle the menace once and for all either by removing them or lodging them in shelter homes.

It is pertinent to note that beggar menace has been a major problem in Margao and Fatorda areas with the authorities concerned failing to resolve the issue till date. Several migrants are also noticed harassing people at the Old Market Circle.

The residents produced videos showing several migrants, mostly beggars occupying the roadside footpaths near the KTC bus stand as a shelter during the night. Most were found sleeping in the temporary tents erected by them.

A large number of migrants whose presence is felt over here have made this place their home, complained Milagres Fernandes, social worker from Fatorda.

“The scene witnessed during the night time is very pathetic. The entire footpath of the national highway at KTC bus stand is occupied by these migrants as they sleep here in tents erected by them,” he informed.

He said that these migrants not only create nuisance but risk their lives by sleeping on the footpath of the busy national highway.

Franco Rodrigues, another citizen, demanded that the police and the other authorities concerned initiate action to remove them or lodge them in shelter homes.
