MARGAO: South Goa police stations have booked 100 cases under the Goa Prevention of Begging Act till May 31, this year. However, the number of beggars in Margao and other parts of Salcete continue to rise, with them seeking alms at virtually every traffic signal and other busy corners.
According South Goa District Police as compared to 2022, this year there were more cases booked. Police said that South Goa police stations this year till May 31, booked 100 cases under the Goa Prevention of Begging Act while last year during same period only five cases were booked .
In Margao, the problem of beggars posing a safety
hazard to motorists. Margao residents allege that
beggars use pedestrians’ space as they live and sleep on footpaths.
In Margao and Fatorda, many beggars use infants and toddlers to beg, and target the general public, begging at traffic signals, petrol pumps, main markets and shopping complexes and create safety hazards for road users.
